Question : POLLUTION CONTROL EQUIPMENT IN SUGAR MILLS



(a) whether it was made mandatory by the Union Government for all the sugar mills to install the pollution control equipment;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the details of sugar mills which have not installed the said equipment so far; and

(d) the action taken/being taken by the Government against such mills?

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTS (SHRI NAMO NARAIN MEENA)

(a) & (b) The operating sugar mills are required to install requisite pollution control equipments and provide necessary facilities to meet the notified standards laid down under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 for different environmental parameters for control of pollution.


(c) & (d) A total of 49 sugar mills (3 in Karnataka, 10 in Tamilnadu, 5 in Uttaranchal, 1 each in West Bengal and Orissa, 4 in Punjab, 15 in Maharashtra, 8 in Haryana and 2 in Uttar Pradesh) are presently not complying with the stipulated norms. Respective State Pollution Control Boards are taking necessary action for enforcement of norms.
