Question : DECREASE IN EMPLOYMENT



(a) whether the general employment in the organised sector has decreased in the country over the last few years;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor; and

(c) the measures taken by the Government to achieve the target fixed in this regard?

(a) & (b): Employment in the organised sector, which is only 7 to 8% of the total employment in the country has declined from 277.89 lakh persons in 2001 to 263.65 lakh persons in 2004 (Quick Estimate), which is mainly due to restructuring of the public sector.

(c): The National Common Minimum Programme stated that the UPA Government will immediately enact a National Employment Guarantee Act. The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act has been passed recently.
