Question : CROP INSURANCE SCHEME



(a) whether some public representatives have complained against the existing crop insurance scheme that the said scheme does not provide insurance cover to the farmers in a proper manner; and

(b) if so, the details thereof and the reaction of the Government thereto?

(a) & (b): National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (NAIS) which is in operation with effect from rabi 1999-2000 is implemented by Agriculture Insurance Company of India Ltd. (AIC). As per the available information, some Hon`ble Members of Parliament have given suggestions for making improvements in the scheme from time to time.

To bring about improvement in the existing scheme and also to make the scheme farmers friendly, a Joint Group was set up to study the improvements required in the existing crop insurance schemes which has inter-alia considered number of issues including proper implementation of the scheme. The Group has already submitted its report. The Government, at present, is consulting various Stakeholders regarding implementation of the recommendations of the Group.
