Question : Import of Power Generation Technology

(a) whether it is a fact that power generation technology to set up projects for generation of power through wind, solar and tides is imported;
(b) if so, the details thereof; and
(c) the cost of technology imported in the country along with their power generation capacity thereof during each of the last three years?

Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR POWER, COAL & NEW AND RENEWABLE ENERGY (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) (SHRI PIYUSH GOYAL)

(a)&(b): The solar and wind power generation technologies are largely indigenous; however, some essential components such as solar photovoltaic cells, modules, inverters etc. for solar projects and blades, raw material and parts of blades, gear box, yaw components for wind energy projects to meet specific functional requirements are imported. The tidal power generation is still in research and development stage and no tidal energy project has been commissioned in the country till date.

(c): The capacities installed for wind and solar power generation during the last three years (2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15) along with the value of imported components are given in the table below:
(Capacity in MW, Value of Import Rs in crore )
Year Wind Energy Solar Energy
Installed
Capacity Value of Imports* Installed Capacity Value of Imports*
2012-13 1698 2.42 754 4494.90
2013-14 2083 1.18 963 4317.17
2014-15 2312 1.02 1112 5051.78
