Question : Setting up of New IIMs

(a) whether the Government is contemplating to set up Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) in the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof, State-wise;

(c) whether the Government has planned to established six new IIMs in the country and if so, the details thereof, State-wise and location-wise;

(d) whether these six new IIMs are likely to start their first academic session in 2015-16 and if so, the details thereof; and

(e) the number of seats likely to be available in each institution every year and the selection process likely to be adopted and the time by which these institutions are likely to be made functional?

(a) to (c): The Union Cabinet has approved setting up and operationalization of six new IIMs at Amritsar (Punjab), Bodhgaya (Bihar), Nagpur (Maharashtra), Sambalpur (Odisha), Sirmaur (Himachal Pradesh), and Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) from their temporary campuses. The Mentor Institutes (tabled below) of the respective new IIMs have accordingly started taking admissions of students for Post Graduate Programme (PGP).

(d) & (e): The academic sessions of these new IIMs are commencing from the current year (2015-16) itself. It is envisaged that new Institutes may begin with 140 students in their first PGP Course by selecting the students through Common Admission Test (CAT) being conducting by IIMs. Initial funds have already been released to the Mentor Institutes to make the new Institutes functional from the current year 2015-16 from their temporary campuses.
