Answer given by the minister

ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE
(SHRI JAGAT PRAKASH NADDA)

Decennial Census does not provide information on life expectancy. Estimated expectation of life at birth, based on the Sample Registration System (SRS), in the country has increased from 60.0 years during 1990-94 to 67.5 years during 2009-13 (latest available). State-wise estimates are available only for bigger States. Estimated expectation of life at birth during the periods 1981-85, 1990-94, 2000-04 and 2009-13 for India and bigger States, gender-wise, are annexed.

Factors responsible for increase in life expectancy include accessible and quality health care services; prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of diseases and life threatening conditions; availability of specialized health care services for pregnant women, children, and senior citizen; accessibility to safe drinking water; improved sanitation; improvement in socio-economic conditions of the people etc.
