Question : Vacant Posts of Doctors

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) the total number of registered medical practitioners in the country;

(b) the State-wise details of the number of posts of doctors lying vacant in the country including Haryana and the time by which these posts are likely to be filled up;

(c) whether the Government is aware that the number of patients is increasing daily whereas the number of hospitals is quite less due to which the disease does not get treated on time and the patients die on many occasions;

(d) the details of the concrete steps being taken to prevent it; and

(e) the total number of AIIMS hospitals announced during the last five years and those on which the construction work has started?

(a): As per the information provided by Medical Council of India (MCI), there are a total 11,59,309 allopathic doctors registered with the State Medical Councils/Medical Council of India as on 31st March, 2019. Assuming 80% availability, it is estimated that around 9.27 lakh doctors may be actually available for active service.
(b): The State-wise details of the number of posts of doctors lying vacant in the country is not maintained centrally.
(c) & (d): Public Health and Hospitals being a State subject, the primary responsibility of providing accessible, affordable and quality healthcare to its citizens lies with the State Governments.
(e): From the year 2014-15 to 2019-20, 15 new AIIMS have been announced to be established in the country. Out of these 15, construction work / pre-investment work has started in all the AIIMS except for AIIMS Bihar and AIIMS Haryana.
