Question : Creation of Modern Sports Centres

(a) whether the Government proposes to set up integrated and fully equipped modern sports centres for the development and promotion of sports and sporting talents for the international sports events including Olympics;
(b) if so, the details of measures taken/ being taken by the Government in this regard;
(c) the details of sports centres functioning under the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in the country;
(d) the details of sports centres out of these which need modernisation and upgradation along with the funds likely to be required for the purpose; and
(e) the details of funds allocated and released for setting up of new sports centres and modernisation/upgradation of various existing sports centres under SAI in the country during the last three years and the current year?

(a) & (b): Sports Authority of India (SAI) has 12 Regional Centres, including National Institute of Sports, Patiala and Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education, Thiruvananthapuram, which have state-of-the-art facilities for training national teams. In addition, several National Sports Academies have been set up. 10 such Academies in Swimming, Cycling, Athletics(Sprints), Cue Sports and hockey in Delhi, Athletic (Middle and Long distance) at Bhopal, Athletics (Sprints and Jumps) and Golf at Thiruvananthapuram, Boxing at Rohtak, SAI Gopichand Badminton Academy at Hyderabad have already been established.
(c) The details of SAI Sports Centres being run across the country are provided at Annexure.
(d) Under STC Scheme, which is a joint venture between SAI and the State Governments, for setting up of a SAI Training Centre, as per the scheme provision, the sports infrastructure is to be provided by the concerned State Government and the recurring expenditure while implementing the scheme is to be borne by SAI.
The sports infrastructure in some STC centres need renovation/Upgradation as the sports infrastructure created by the State Government was not maintained due to paucity of funds. However, SAI has taken up the Upgradation works in STC Alwar, STC Bhiwani, STC Medikeri, SAG Allepy and funds required for Upgradation have been allocated to the respective Regional Heads.
