Question : LIVESTOCK CENSUS



(a) the details of the livestock census conducted in the country so far, census wise;

(b) the number of milching animals including cows, buffaloes, etc. in these livestock census, details thereof, State/UT – wise;

(c) whether the number of cattle has declined as per livestock census – 2001 conducted during 2012-13, if so, the details thereof along with the reasons therefor; and

(d)the details of the total decline in the number of livestock in comparison to previous livestock census, State/UT – wise?

(a) Livestock Census is conducted in every five year to count the number animals under various species of livestock in the country. So far 19 such Censuses have been conducted. The first livestock census, after independence was conducted in the year 1951. The species-wise total number of animals in these censuses is placed at ‘Annexure-I’.

(b) As per 19th Livestock Census-2012, there are 67.54 million numbers of milch cattle, 51.05 million numbers of milch buffaloes and 61.56 million numbers of milch goats are reported in the country. The state-wise number of milch animals of cows, buffaloes and goats as reported in Livestock Censuses -2012 is placed at ‘Annexure-II’.

(c) The Livestock Census was not conducted in the year 2001 but it has been conducted in the year 2003. As per Livestock Census 2003 the number of cattle was 185.18 million which has increased to 190.90 million in 2012.

(d) The State/UT-wise details of the total increase or decrease in the number of livestock during the Livestock Censuses 2007 and 2012 is placed at ‘Annexure-III’.
