Question : ADMISSION UNDER SPORTS QUOTA



(a) the norms/criteria for admission in various colleges of Delhi University including Delhi School of Economics under sports category;

(b) whether these norms/criteria are applicable to all courses/programmes including M.A. (Economics) run by the Delhi University;

(c) if so, whether the quota under sports category for the academic session 2009-10 has been filled up in all the courses/programmes;

(d) if not,the reasons therefor;

(e) whether the university also maintain any waiting list for admission under this quota;

(f) if so,the details thereof;and

g) the action taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) & (b): According to the information furnished by the University of Delhi,5% of seats in each of the courses, except the courses offered under the Faculty of Medical Sciences,Faculty of Technology and Faculty of Management Studies,are offered for admission on the basis of proficiency in sports.The procedure laid down by the University for admission to post-graduate courses in the University, including in M.A.(Economics) under Delhi School of Economics, provide, inter-alia,that all students should sit in the Entrance Test, wherever applicable. Under the ‘Sports Quota’,students are required to subject themselves to a trial to be conducted by the Delhi University Sports Council and the marks awarded by the Council are added to the marks obtained by the candidates in the Entrance Test. There is a combined ranking for the General as well as Sports Category candidates and admission is granted on inter- se-merit.

(c) to (f): No,Sir.In case of admission to M.A. (Economics),no candidate could quality for admission by securing 40% marks even after inclusion of the marks awarded by the Sports Counci, which is the minimum ‘cut-off’ for admission in to course. Waiting list is maintained only in those cases where eligible candidates are available after filling up all the seats available under the ‘Sports Quota’.
