Question : Low Cost Solar Lighting Device

(a) whether the Government had launched a low cost and environment-friendly solar lighting device in the recent past;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the benefits accrued/likely to accrue therefrom;

(c) the extent to which it is likely to reduce emission and give a fillip to the mission of Clean India, Green India; and

(d) the job opportunities likely to be generated as a result of the said launch?

(a) Yes, Madam. The Government has launched a low cost and environment-friendly solar lighting device named as ‘Surya Jyoti’ on 5th April 2016.

(b) The device is solar photovoltaic integrated Micro solar dome which captures sunlight through a semi-spherical upper dome and concentrates it inside dark room during day time and also provide light after sunset. The device is the low cost solution to meet the lighting requirement for the urban and rural household in the country that do not have reliable access to electricity.

(c) The estimated potential users of this device are about 10 million households which will result in emission reduction of about 12.5 million tons of carbon-di-oxide equivalent.

(d) The manufacturing process and installation of device is labour intensive providing job opportunities to semi–trained workers.
