Question : All India Chess Federation

(a) whether it is a fact that on the basis of complaints filed by some chess players the Competition Commission of India has penalised the All India Chess Federation and directed it to cease and desist from anti-competitive practices;

(b) if so, the details thereof alongwith the reaction of the Government thereto; and

(c) the other steps taken/being taken by the Government to prevent recurrence of such practices in sports federations?

(a) & (b) All India Chess Federation (AICF) has informed that the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has imposed a penalty on the basis of complaints received from some Chess players and directed them to cease and desist from indulging in anti competitive practices in terms of the Competition Act, 2002.

The said order has been stayed by the Hon’ble National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT). The order of the CCI is also subject to the outcome of the pending writ petition on this subject in the Hon’ble High Court, Madras filed by the AICF.

(c) The relationship between the National Sports Federations (NSFs) and players/athletes registered with them is governed by guidelines issued by the NSFs concerned.
