Question : Share of Atomic Plants in Energy Requirement

(a) whether the share of atomic energy in total energy production is very low in comparison with other developed countries; and

(b) if so, the steps being taken by the Government to bridge this gap along with the steps being taken to increase the share of atomic energy in total energy production in the coming decades?

THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR PERSONNEL, PUBLIC GRIEVANCES & PENSIONS AND PRIME MINISTER’S OFFICE (Dr. JITENDRA SINGH):

(a)Yes, Sir.

(b)The share of nuclear power is planned to be increased by adding more installed nuclear power capacity progressively. The present capacity of 5780 MW is expected to reach 10,080 MW on progressive completion of projects under commissioning / construction.

Government has also accorded financial sanction for new projects totaling to 3400 MW, which are being readied for launch in 2016, apart from planning for more reactors in future.
