(a) whether a new mobile Earthquake and Tsunami warning system has been developed in the country;
(b) if so, the salient features thereof;
(c) Whether the Government has provided funds for development of such technology;
(d) if so, the details thereof; and
(e) the areas in which the new technology has been successfully demonstrated in the country?

(a)&(b) Government of India is in the process of setting up an Early Warning System for Tsunamis and Storm Surges in the Indian Ocean region. The system will consist of collection and comprehensive analysis of seismic, sea level and tide gauge observations from strategic locations to locate large undersea earthquakes and evaluate their potential for Tsunami genesis. The system is likely to be made operational by September, 2007. As part of this endeavor, a 17-Station Real Time Seismic Monitoring Network is being set up by India Meteorological Department. The Tsunami Warning system being set up would monitor the generation and propagation of Tsunamis in the Indian Ocean region and issue suitable warnings.
(c)&(d) The Government has approved Rs. 125 crores for the Tsunami and Storm Surge Warning System.
(e) This is a first system of its kind in the country.
