Question : STPs under Namami Gange Mission

(a) the progress made under Namami Gange Mission during the last two years;
(b) whether the Government is contemplating rejuvenation strategy for 12 major tributaries of Ganga, if so, the details thereof, if not, the reasons therefor;
(c) whether the Government has looked into the progress on the construction of Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) under the Mission, if so, the details thereof; and
(d) the other steps taken by the Government to bring more population under the sewerage network?

(a) Namami Gange Mission was launched in the year 2014-15. Under Namami Gange, 126 projects are under execution including the projects sanctioned under National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) framework. These include 85 projects for creation of new Sewage Treatment Capacity, rehabilitation of existing capacity and also involves laying / rehabilitation of sewer network. All the on-going projects are scheduled to be completed by 2020.

(b) The ‘National Ganga River Basin Authority’ (NGRBA) was formed in 2009 as an empowered planning, financing, monitoring and coordinating authority for the Ganga River, to ensure effective abatement of pollution and conservation of the river Ganga by adopting a holistic approach with the river basin as the unit of planning. Under the Namami Ganga- Integrated Ganga Conservation Mission, work is being taken up on the main stem of river Ganga, and certain critical tributaries like Ramganga, Kali, Hindon and Yamuna as a first priority.

(c) The construction of Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) under the Mission is monitored on a regular basis by the State Project Management Group (SPMGs) of the concerned State and reported to National Mission for Clean Ganga.

(d) The laying of the sewage network is primarily a mandate of the local Municipal bodies. However, need based sewerage network is also taken up under Namami Gange Programme. Laying of 3669.80 km sewage network is included under the Namami Gange programme. Laying of 847.36 km network has been completed.
