Question : List of Martyrs

(a) whether the Government has prepares, State-wise list of martyrs;
(b) if so, whether the Government proposes to include it in the curriculum of State level local schools;
(c) if not, the reasons therefor;
(d) whether the Government is aware that objectionable things against the martyrs are being written in many textbooks; and
(e) if so, the details of the steps likely to be taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) The Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) has compiled and published the Dictionary of Martyrs: India’s Freedom Struggle (1857-1947) in three volumes covering the States of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattishgarh, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

(b) & (c) Education being in the concurrent list of the Constitution, it is up to the State Governments to decide the issue of inclusion of list of martyrs in the curriculum of State schools.
(d) & (e) There are no objectionable things written in NCERT Textbooks. However, there are sporadic complaints about private textbooks and it is for the respective State Governments and Examination Boards to deal with such complaints.
