Question : FISHING HARBOURS IN TAMIL NADU



(a) the details of each fishing harbour functioning in Tamil Nadu at present;

(b) whether there is any proposal for developing coastal town in Southern District of Tamil Nadu particularly Kannyakumari District including Ramanthurai and Thengaipattinam towns into fishing harbours to facilitate fishermen;

(c) if so, the details thereof location-wise and by when it is likely to be set up;

(d) whether partially developed fishing harbour at Muttom would be further development into a full fledged one; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a): Details of fishing harbours functioning in Tamil Nadu at present location-wise are as below:-

(b)&(c): Yes, Sir. The Government of Tamil Nadu has posed three proposals for construction of fishing harbours in Southern Districts, viz Rameswaram in Ramanad District, Poompuhar and Pazhayar stage-II in Nagapattinam District. After scrutiny of these proposals, the State Government has been asked to confirm the availability of necessary land, receipt of environmental clearance from the competent authority and adequate budgetary provision in the State Budget.

The State Government has completed pre-project investigations for construction of fishing harbour at Thengapattinam in Kanyakumari District. The Union Government has not received any proposal for construction of fishing harbour at Ramanthurai

(d)&(e): No proposal has been received from the Government of Tamil Nadu for development of a full fledged fishing harbour at Muttom.
