(a) The Government has approved Atal Bhujal Yojana (ATAL JAL), a Rs.6000 Crore Central Sector Scheme, for sustainable management of ground water resources with community participation. The funding pattern is 50:50 between Government of India and World Bank. It is envisaged that ATAL JAL shall also play a key role in centrally sponsored scheme ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’ by improving source sustainability of ground water based rural drinking water supply schemes in certain areas.
(b) The scheme has two components, viz. i) Institutional Strengthening and Capacity Building Component, aimed at strengthening the ground water governance mechanism in the participating States and ii) Incentive Component, aimed at incentivizing the States for various measures for ensuring the long-term sustainability of ground water resources.
Further, the scheme envisages active participation of the communities in various activities related to sustainable ground water management.
(c) The identified water stressed areas fall in the States of Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
