(a) the number of autonomous colleges in the country as on
date, State-wise and university wise;
(b) whether there is any proposal to convert Government
institutions into autonomous institutions by cutting off
their financial aid, particularly in the State of Karnataka;
and
(c) if so, the details thereof?

(a) According to the information furnished by the
University Grants Commission (UGC), the number of autonomous
colleges in the country as on date is 214. A statement
indicating State-wise and University-wise break up of these
colleges is annexed.
(b) and (c): Conferment of autonomous status on Government
colleges/ institutions does not reduce their grants. It
rather enhances their funding as the UGC provides financial
assistance up to Rs.12.00 lakh per annum to an autonomous
college for academic and infrastructural development.
