Question : Mid Day Meal for Students of Drought Affected Areas

(a) whether the Government proposes to serve mid day meal everyday including holidays
to the students in drought-hit states;
(b) if so, the details thereof State/UT wise including State of Uttar Pradesh;
(c) if not, the reasons therefor;
(d) whether the Government has allocated additional amounts to drought affected States in
order to serve the midday meal to the school children all days of the week; and
(e) if so, the details thereof State/ UT-wise including the State of Uttar Pradesh and if not, the
reason therefor?

(a) to (e): The Mid Day Meal Guidelines envisage serving of mid day meals in elementary
schools during summer vacation in areas which are formally notified by the concerned State
Governments as drought affected. The number of days on which meals are to be served during
summer vacation are decided by the State Governments concerned. Under the scheme,
proposals for serving mid day meal during summer vacation in respect of drought affected areas
of 12 States viz. Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya
Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh have been
approved by this Ministry.
In addition to an amount of Rs. 2572.32 crore released to the States as part of regular grant for
the year 2016-17, an amount of Rs. 480.91 crore has been released to 12 States for serving mid
day meals during summer vacation in drought affected areas. The State-wise details of
additional grant released to drought affected areas of 12 States including Uttar Pradesh are
given at Annexure.
