Question : CAPACITY OF MAJOR PORTS



(a) whether the Government propose to increase the major ports capacity during the Ninth Plan period ;

(b) if so, the total outlay made for the purpose ;

(c) whether the Government are expecting private participation in the sector;

(d) if so, the details thereof ; and

(e) the extent to which Calcutta Port and Haldia Port would benefit after implementation of the proposal ?

(a) Yes, Sir.

(b) The total outlay made for major Ports during 9th Five Year Plan is Rs 8543 crores.

(c) Yes, Sir.

(d) During 9th Plan an investment approximately to the tune of Rs 8000 crores is targeted to be raised through private sector participation. So far, 13 private sector projects aggregating 52.80 million tonnes of capacity with investment of Rs 3926 crores have been approved. Eight projects of 34.4 million tonnes capacity involving investment of Rs 3500 crores are under bidding process. Three projects aggregating to 5 million tonnes capacity and investment of Rs 450 crores have been identified for which bids are to be invited.

(e) An additional capacity of 8.5 million tonnes is likely to be created in Calcutta and Haldia Ports after materalisation of projects envisaged under private sector participation.
