Question : SHORTAGE OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHERS



(a) whether there is shortage of Physical Education Teachers in the country;

(b) if so, the number of sanctioned posts and the present strength in each State/UT including Delhi; and

(c) the remedial measures taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) & (b): The Schedule to the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009 provides that there shall be one part time instructor for health and physical education in each upper primary school, where the enrolment is more than 100. The State- wise sanctioned posts of health and physical education instructor is at Annexure.

As reported by Government of Delhi, there are 1360 sanctioned posts of Physical Education teachers in the Directorate of Education, out of which 936 posts are filled up on regular basis and remaining through guest teachers.

(c) : State governments and UT administrations are responsible for recruitment of teachers in their jurisdiction.
