Question : FIRE IN CNG BASED CARS



(a) the number of CNG cars that have caught fire during the last three years and the current year;

(b) whether the Government has conducted any enquiry into finding out the causes of these accidents;

(c) if so, the details thereof;

(d) whether the Government is taking any steps to check the recurrence of such accidents;

(e) if so, the details thereof; and

(f) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) to (f): The rules relating to the norms and safety standards in respect of motor vehicles fitted with CNG kits, have been notified under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR), 1989 under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH). The responsibility lies with the concerned State Government to ensure that the rules notified under the CMVR, 1989 are enforced strictly and that the vehicles converted to CNG mode are complying with the safety standards. Further, it is also the responsibility of State Government to enquire into such incidents of CNG cars catching fire in order to know the reasons and to take corrective measures. This Ministry does not maintain any data with regard to the incidents of CNG run cars catching fire.
