Question : Shortage of Fodder

(a) the details of the necessary steps taken by the Government to meet the shortage of animal fodder in the country;
(b) whether the Government has prepared any National Fodder Policy, if so, the details thereof;
(c) whether any special variety of animal fodder has been developed to meet the shortage of the same in Rajasthan, if so, the details thereof; and
(d) the number of advanced and hybrid varieties of seeds developed during the last five years along with the details thereof?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PART (a) TO (d) OF THE LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 40 PUT IN BY SHRI KANAKMAL KATARA AND SHRIMATI KESHARI DEVI PATEL ON “SHORTAGE OF FODDER” DUE FOR ANSWER ON 4TH FEBRUARY 2020


(a) The Government has already taken necessary steps to increase fodder production in various part the country by providing financial assistance to the States / Union Territories under Centrally Sponsored National Livestock Mission with a Sub Mission on Feed and Fodder Development implemented by Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying since year 2014-15 and is continuing at present.

From the year 2014-15 for drought affected areas, Additional Fodder Development Programme a sub scheme of Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) is also being implemented by Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare which is continuing during the current year also.

In addition to this, financial assistance is also provided for other Fodder Development Programmes planned by the States / Union Territories under normal Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) scheme implemented by Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare which is also being supported by this Ministry.

(c) Several varieties of fodder crops have been developed across the country including the State of Rajasthan during previous years. The details of important fodder varieties during last five years is annexed.

(d) The fodder crop varieties listed at annexure are advanced varieties and the respective States primarily undertakes fodder seed production programme with the involvement of Public and Private Seed Agencies. The breeder seeds of indented fodder varieties are regularly being produced by the Institutes under Indian Council of Agricultural Research as well as State Agricultural Universities as per indent of Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India.
