Question : DRIP IRRIGATION



(a) whether sweet water is distributed for irrigation/drip irrigation in the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the steps taken by the Government to promote the concept of drip irrigation amongst farmers, so as to save water;

(d) the details in this regard, State-wise; and

(e) the other steps taken by the Government to educate the farmers to use this system and acquire skill in the operational aspects of different micro irrigation systems and their maintenance?

(a) & (b): Surface water and ground water is used for irrigation /drip irrigation in the country.

(c): A Centrally Sponsored Scheme on Micro Irrigation was launched in January, 2006 with an assistance @ 40% as Government of India (GOI) share, @ 10% as State Share and @ 50% as the beneficiary share to promote the micro irrigation which includes drip and sprinkler system of irrigation. The scheme is now continuing in mission mode since June, 2010 as the “National Mission on Micro Irrigation” (NMMI) with enhanced scope for coverage incorporating revised cost norms as well as inclusion of additional components. Under the scheme assistance is now being provided for small & marginal farmers @ 50% as GOI share, 10% as State share and 40% as beneficiary share and @ 40% as GOI share, 10% State share and 50% beneficiary share in case of general farmers (other than small & marginal).

After upgrading the scheme in Mission Mode yearly allocation has become more than 1000 crore in comparison to the earlier maximum allocation to the Micro Irrigation scheme of Rs.480.00 crore in 2009-10.

(d): The Statewise physical and financial details under Micro Irrigation and National Mission on Micro Irrigation is annexed at Annexure-I & Annexure-II respectively.

(e): Under NMMI farmers are educated to use the system through demonstration, training and awareness programmes. Besides, 22 Precision Farming Development Centres (PFDCs) are performing various research work in the field related to crop wise water requirement based on climatic condition including training of the farmers in the country.
