(c) The Major Ports are facing following problems in general:-
(i) Old and obsolete equipments
(ii) Low productivity of workers
(iii) Lack of professionalism in Port functioning.
In the State of Maharashtra, there are two Major Ports namely Jawaharlal Nehru and
Mumbai Ports. While Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust faces no major problems, Mumbai Port Trust
faces the problem of declining cargo, surplus manpower, increasing overheads etc.
Following action has been initiated to tackle these problems:-
(i) Government has initiated a process of modernisation of Port equipment.
(ii) Port Sector has been thrown open for Private Sector participation.
(iii) Decision has been taken to corporatise the existing Ports in a phased manner inter-alia to introduce better managerial practices.
(d) The details of volume of goods traffic during the last three years are as follows:-
Year Traffic (In Million Tonnes)
1996-97 227.26 1997-98 251.66 1998-99 251.72
(e) The cargo handling capacity as on 31st March, 1999 was 240 million tonnes. As this
capacity is over stretched, measures have been initiated to modernise the ports and to create
additional 160 million tonnes capacity in the Major Ports during the 9th Plan consistent with
the expected growth of Port traffic.
