Question : MARKET INTERVENTION SCHEME FOR POTATO AND ONION



(a) whether a number of State Governments particularly Government of Karnataka had conducted Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) for Potato and Onion during the Kharif period 1997;

(b) if so, the losses incurred by each of the State Governments for conducting such MIS, State-wise;

(c) whether the Union Government have to share the losses under the scheme;

(d) if so, the details thereof;

(e) whether the requests of the State Governments for reimbursement of the Central Share are still pending with the Union Government;

(f) if so, the reasons therefor; and

(g) the steps taken to release the Central Share to State Governments?

(a): MIS for Potato and Onion during Kharif 1997 season was implemented in Karnataka only.

(b) to (d): A total loss to the extent of Rs.338 lakh was incurred in procurement of Potato and Onion under MIS during Kharif 1997 season in the State of Karnataka to be shared both by the Central Government and State Government on 50:50 basis.

(e): Yes, Sir.

(f) & (g): As per procedure laid down, the reimbursement of Central Government share would be released to the State Government after approval of the accounts by the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance which is seized of the matter.
