Question : STUDENTS GOING ABROAD FOR STUDIES



(a) whether the Government are aware that a large number of Indian students are going abroad for higher studies;

(b) if so, the estimated number of students going abroad for higher education per year;

(c) whether the Government have imposed some restriction for Indian Students going abroad for higher studies;

(d) if so, the reasons therefor; and

(e) the steps taken to protect the interest of the Indian students alongwith the regulatory norms prescribed in this regard?

(a) & (b): With the economic and financial reforms set in motion by the Government since 1991, there has been an internationalization of higher education through institutional linkage, increase in students mobility and offering of programmes across international boundaries. According to the available data, 6,918 students went abroad for higher students during the year 1998-99.

(c) No, Sir.

(d) Does not arise.

(e) The interests of Indians abroad including students studying abroad are protected through Indian Missions in the respective foreign countries. No regulatory norms as such have, however, been prescribed in this regard.
