Question : RESTORATION OF AGRICULTURE LANDS



(a) whether the Government is aware that due to overflow of Chenab river hundreds of acres of agricultural land are being destroyed;

(b) if so, the steps being taken by the Government to restore agricultural lands;

(c) whether the Government has received any proposal from the Government of Jammu and Kashmir for restoration of these agricultural land; and

(d) if so, the details thereof and the action taken thereon?

(a) Yes, Sir.

(b)to(d) As informed by the Government of Jammu & Kashmir, flood protection works are being executed at vulnerable spots on Left Bank of river Chanab, downstream Akhnoor with Institutional funding and funds available with the State.

The State Government has also sent a Master Plan for flood protection works on river Chenab in J&K State at an estimated cost of Rs. 23 crores for techno-economic appraisal and acceptance by Planning Commission. The proposal envisages strengthening of existing and construction of new embankments, spurs, studs, crate bars etc. on both the banks of the river and would save about 80 Hectares of land from erosion every year. The techno-economic appraisal of the proposal by specialized units under Ministry of Water Resources was done and comments were sent to the State Government.

A programme on Eco-Restoration of Degraded Catchments of Jhelum, Chenab and Shivaliks using Participatory Approach was launched during 2002-03. The degraded catchments of Jhelum and Chenab would be treated under the ongoing programmes of soil Conservation for Enhancing the Productivity of Degraded Lands in the Catchments of River Valley Project and Flood Prone Rivers .
