Question : MAKE IN INDIA PROJECTS IN NER



(a) whether the Government has proposed to make an inroad into Northeast Region on an innovative policy of make in India in the form of Make in North East initiative;

(b) if so, the details thereof, including the key focus areas under consideration of the Government;

(c) whether the Government has plans to formulate a comprehensive tourism scheme for the region, and if so, the details thereof; and

(d) the steps taken/ under the consideration of the Minsitry to encourage investment and promote sustainable development in the region?

The Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region [Dr.Jitendra Singh]

(a)to (b) Expeditious and time bound completion of critical infrastructure of NER such as road, rail, inland waterways, power, airports and air connectivity, telecom connectivityis one of the thrust areas of the Government. With the ultimate objective of leveraging the potential growth sectors of the NER such as tourism, hospitality services, handicrafts, handlooms, silk products, fruits & vegetables, agrofoods, animal products and spices. Government has not only focused on improving linkages of the region with other parts of the country but also for close bilateral relations with neighbouring countries in South East and East Asia. Following upon the announcement made by the Hon’ble Prime Minister for setting up of Apparel and Garment Centres in each of the NE States, M/o Textiles has already initiated action. In addition, Skill Development has been identified as a thrust area to cater to the skilled manpower needs of potential growth sectors both in the North East and in the rest of the country.

(c)& (d) North East Council has approved in December, 2011 an “Integrated Tourism Master Plan” for the North East Region identifying various tourist circuits in different states of the North East. Implementation of the same has been pursued with the stakeholders including the central government, state government and tour operators. The steps being taken are intended to accelerate this fast growing sector so as to promote employment generation in the hospitality and services sector and also for creating markets for local products. M/o DoNER also supports regular business seminars, workshops etc. to identify potential areas of business and to encourage investment and promotion of sustainable development in the region.
