Question : DEATHS DUE TO RABIES



(a) the estimated deaths due to rabies in the country during the last three years, State-wise;

(b) whether sixty percent of the deaths due to rabies in the World occur in India;

(c) if so, whether the Government have any proposal to launch a National Programme to control rabies; and

(d) if so, the decision taken/being taken by the Government thereon?

(a) A statement indicating the reported number of cases and deaths due to rabies/dog bites for the year 1996, 1997 and 1998, as maintained by Central Bureau of Health Intelligence, is annexed.

(b) There are no government estimates.

(c) & (d) Rabies is primarily a disease of animals. Human beings are accidental dead-ends. Government provides rabies immunization for animal bite cases as a post exposure treatment free of cost. However, there is no National Programme to control rabies.
