(a) A statement indicating the reported number of cases
and deaths due to rabies/dog bites for the year 1996, 1997
and 1998, as maintained by Central Bureau of Health
Intelligence, is annexed.
(b) There are no government estimates.
(c) & (d) Rabies is primarily a disease of animals. Human
beings are accidental dead-ends. Government provides rabies immunization for
animal bite cases as a post exposure treatment free of cost. However, there
is no National Programme to control rabies.
