Question : CLOSURE OF CACHAR SUGAR MILL



(a) whether the Cachar Sugar Mill had been lying closed for the last twenty years;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;

(c) the number of workers rendered unemployed due to closure of the said sugar mill;

(d) whether the Government proposes to revive the said mill; and

(e) if so, the details thereof and the time by which it is likely to be revived?

(a) to (e): The Government of Assam has informed that the operation of the mill has been closed due to huge accumulated losses and non-availability of adequate raw material. 83 workers have been rendered unemployed due to its closure. The mill has been declared closed w.e.f. 27.04.2007 and there is no proposal before the State Government to revive it. It had been reported to the Central Government that the mill had not functioned during 1990-91 to 1995-96 sugar seasons and from 1999-2000 sugar season onwards, and had functioned in 1996-97 to 1998-99 sugar seasons.
