Coal Washeries

Will the MINISTER OF COAL be pleased to state:
(a) the number of coal washeries currently in operation and the amount of coal above G 10 washed during the last year State-wise;
(b) whetherinstances of coal being utilized before washing has been reported and if so, the details thereof and the remedial measures taken thereon;
(c) whether the Government has received proposals from various states for the setting up of certain private coal washeries in the country;
(d) if so, the state-wise details and status thereof including the reasons for non-approval of proposals if any; and
(e) the measures being taken to handle the environment concerns arising due to poor quality coal and to produce higher grade of coal?
ANSWER

(a): There are 15 washeries currently in operation in Coal India Limited (CIL) subsidiaries. Thedetails are as given below:

Raw coal inferior to G10 grade fed to washery in CIL was 1.756 MT for the year 2014-15.
(b):Total dispatch of coal by CIL during 2014-15 was 488.862 MT. Out of this, 16.340 MT (coking 5.334MT + non coking 11.006MT) of coal wasfed to washery for washing.
To improve the supply of washed coal, CIL has planned to install 15 newwasheries with the total capacity of 112.60 Mty.
(c)&(d):No approval is required from the Ministry for setting up coal washery. However, the company setting up the washery is required to obtain necessary clearances form Ministry of Environment & Forest (MOEF)/Pollution Control Board.
(e):CIL has taken following steps to handle the environment concerns arisingdue to poor quality coal and to produce higher grade of coal:-
i. Deployment of more number of Surface Miners to facilitate selective mining.
ii. Enhance coal production from underground mine; planned 52.34 MT by 2019-20.
iii. Fifteen washeries have been planned for installation with a capacity of 112.60 Million tons
iv. Selective mining of bands of more than one meter thickness.
