Question : POTA REVIEW COMMITTEES



(a) the number of POTA Review Committees constituted so far, State-wise;

(b) the number of police officers included in these committees alongwith their names; and

(c) the number of cases examined by these committees, State-wise?

(a): One Review Committee was set up by the Central Government under the repealed POTA. In addition, as per the information available, the States of Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra and NCT of Delhi had constituted Review Committees under the repealed POTA. The Central Government has constituted three Review Committees under the Prevention of Terrorism (Repeal) Ordinance, 2004 promulgated on 21.09.2004.

(b): Each of the three Central Review Committees constituted is headed by a retired Judge of the High Court and has two Members including one retired IPS officer. The names of the three retired IPS officers who are Members of these three Central Review Committees are:


(i) Shri R.C. Jha
(ii) Shri D.K. Arya
(iii) Shri B.J. S. Sial


(c): The Central Review Committees are statutorily required to complete the review of all cases registered under POTA within a period of one year from the date of promulgation of the Ordinance i.e. by 20.9.2005.
