Question : Slaughter Houses

(a) the number of registered/licensed slaughter houses in the country, State/UT-wise;

(b) whether any irregularities have been found during the inspection of these slaughter houses, if so, the action taken by the Government thereon along with the details thereof; and

(c) the steps taken by the Government against unregistered slaughter houses in various States and Union Territories?

(a) The number of slaughter houses for which license/ registration have been issued under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (FSS Act, 2006) is annexed. However, as regards export of meat, Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry has registered 64 nos. of abattoirs-cum-meat processing plants / stand alone abattoirs.

(b) & (c) As per Entry 18 of Twelfth Schedule (Article 243W) of the Constitution of India, regulation of slaughter houses and tanneries is in Powers, Authorities and responsibilities of Municipalities of the States. However, as regards export of meat, Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry has constituted a Plant Registration Committee comprising of members from concerned Central and State Government Ministries/Departments for carrying out physical inspection of the plant for registration with APEDA. In case of major non conformities observed by the Committee constituted by APEDA, re-verification of compliance is done by atleast a two member committee.
