Question : SETTING UP OF CARGO TERMINAL AT JNPT, MUMBAI



(a) whether the Government has conducted any feasibility study for setting up new cargo terminal at Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Mumbai.

(b) if so , the details thereof, if not, the reasons therefor; and

(c) the time by which the construction work of new terminal is likely to be started?

(a): Yes, Madam.On the directions of the Government, a Business Plan has been prepared by the JNPT. According to this Business Plan, development of two new cargo terminals have been identified.

(b) & (c): The Port has undertaken the development of 4th Container Terminal at an estimated cost of Rs. 6700 crores. The Phase-I of the Terminal is tentatively scheduled to be started in December, 2010 and completed by December, 2013. The Phase-II is scheduled to be commenced in December, 2013 and completed in December, 2015.

Another project is the development of a standalone container terminal with a quay length of 330 m towards north of JNPT. The estimated cost of this terminal will be Rs. 600 crores. It’s tentative schedule of construction will start in November, 2010 and complete in November, 2012.

Total capacity addition with these two projects will be to the tune of 5.6 Million TEUs per annum.
