Question : WORKING OF CENTRAL EXCISE SETTLEMENT COMMISSION



(a)whether the Government have reviewed the working of the Customs and Central Excise Settlement Commission;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the cases received and settled by the Commission, State-wise;

(d) whether the Commission propose to set up more benches in the country;and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a) & (b): Settlement Commission was established in 1999 with the Principal Bench at Delhi and three additional benches at Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. However, keeping in view the workload in the initial years, it was decided to make only the Principal Bench and the additional benches at Mumbai and Chennai functional. On review, it has also been decided to make the Kolkata bench functional during the current financial year.

(c) : A statement is annexed.

(d) & (e) : There is no such proposal at present.
