(a) whether the set up of research and invention in the agriculture sector of the country is one of the biggest in the world;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the number of scientists, researchers, administrators and other persons engaged in this service during 2001-2002;

(d) the amount spent on their salaries, allowances etc. during the said period; and

(e) the amount allocated to provide necessary facilities for research work during the above period?

(a) & (b) : Yes, Sir. The National Agricultural Research System comprising of ICAR Institutions, State and Central Agricultural Universities is one of the largest in the world. The Department is implementing 72 Major Research Schemes through ICAR Institutes (47), National Bureaux (5), National Research Centres (29), Project Directorates (11), and All India Co-ordinated Research Projects (82) encompassing research on food crops, commercial crops, horticultural crops, animal science, natural resource management, agricultural engineering, fisheries, agricultural education besides transferring front line technologies to the farmers.

(c) The details are as under :

(d) The amount spent on their salaries, allowances etc. during the said period is Rs. 12.23 crore under Plan and Rs. 380.21 crore under Non-Plan.

(e) The amount allocated to provide necessary facilities for research work during the above period is Rs. 684 crore.
