(a) & (b): As per information provided by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a total of 1,06,527, 1,18,866 and 1,22,877 cases were reported under cruelty by husband or his relatives (section 498A IPC) during 2012, 2013 and 2014 respectively. NCRB has started collecting data on the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005

since 2014. A total of 426 cases were reported under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 during 2014. State/UT wise cases reported, cases chargesheeted, cases convicted, persons arrested, persons chargesheeted and persons convicted under cruelty by husband or his relatives (Section 498A IPC) during 2012-2014 and the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 during 2014 is enclosed at Annexure-I & II respectively. NCRB does not collect data on women died due to domestic violence separately. State/UT wise cases reported, cases chargesheeted, cases convicted, persons arrested, persons chargesheeted and persons convicted under dowry deaths (Section 304B IPC) during 2012-2014 is enclosed at Annexure-III.
(c) to (e): State Governments have appointed Dowry Prohibition Officers. In most of the States, the duty of Dowry Prohibition Officer has been given as additional charge to existing State functionaries.The Government of India regularly conducts awareness generation programmes and publicity campaigns on various laws relating to women including Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 through workshops, fairs, cultural programmes, seminars, training programmes etc. Advertisements are regularly brought out in the print and electronic media to create awareness on laws relating to rights of women.

The Ministry of Home Affairs had issued a detailed advisory on 4th September, 2009 to all the State Governments/Union Territory Administrations wherein all the States/UTs have been advised to explore the possibility of associating NGOs working in the area of combating crimes against women and also that all Police stations may be directed to display the name and other details of Protection Officers of the area appointed under the Domestic Violence Act, 2005.
Ministry of Home Affairs has requested the States/UTs dated 5th January, 2015 on “Setting up of IUCAWs in different parts of the country, the objective of these units will be to assist local police in investigation of heinous crimes viz. Rape, dowry death, acid attack, Human Trafficking against women etc. which is available at

As per Seventh Schedule of the Constitution ‘Police’ and ‘Public Order’
are the State subjects, and as such, the primary responsibility of prevention detection, registration, investigation and prosecution of crimes, including crimes against women pertaining to domestic violence, lies with the State Governments/ Union Territory Administrations
