Question : Research and Development under AYUSH

Will the Minister of AYURVEDA, YOGA AND NATUROPATHY, UNANI, SIDDHA AND HOMOEOPATHY (AYUSH) be pleased to state:

(a) the details of the research institutions/centres under AYUSH system of medicines, institution-wise and streamwise;

(b) the details of Research and Development activities undertaken by these institutions along with the findings during the last three years, stream-wise;

(c) the details regarding research activities in the field of "Varma-vital points" (Varmakalai) which is effective in treating of disorder in ENT and nervous system along with the steps taken to preserve this rare form of treatment and its texts, literature and works;

(d) whether the Government has any proposal to open more research and development institutions/centres for conservation and promotion of the AYUSH system of medicine, if so, the details thereof;

(e) whether the Union Government has received any requests from certain States including Tamil Nadu with regard to start new Research Institutes for AYUSH, if so, the details thereof and the response of the Government thereon along with funds allocated/released to States for the purpose; and

(f) the further steps taken/being taken by the Government to provide AYUSH based research facilities to treat various diseases/life style diseases?

(a): The Ministry of AYUSH has set up five autonomous Research Councils, namely, Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Central Council for Research in Yoga & Naturopathy (CCRYN), Central Council for Research in Unani Medicines (CCRUM), Central Council for Research in Siddha (CCRS) and Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH)

with the mandate to under-take research in their respective system. A total of 82 institutes/units are functioning under these Councils. The stream wise no. of institutions as below:
CCRAS(Ayurveda): 30
CCRYN(yoga and naturopathy): 01
CCRUM(Unani): 23
CCRS(Siddha): 06
CCRH(Homoeopathy): 22
(b): The details of the Research and development activities are as under:

(i) CCRAS has developed 14 drug formulations out of which 11 have been commercialised; Study completed in two cases; and pre-clinical studies completed in 06 cases. It has also initiated drug development on bronchial asthma.

(ii) CCRH has initiated research studies in non- communicable diseases using homoeopathic medicines mentioned in traditional text books and has completed pre-clinical trials for drugs on cancer and clinical trials for developing drugs on diabetes, hypertension, bronchial asthma and hyperlipidemia.

(iii) CCRUM has initiated four multi- Centric Randomized Controlled Trials(RCTs) for non- communicable diseases including diabetes and hypertension.

(iv) CCRS has completed pre-clinical studies for developing drugs, namely, OA 1 Chooranam for osteoarthritis.

(v) The details of the patent filed by the Research Councils during last three years are at Annexure.
(c): Presently, CCRS has initiated a clinical trial on cegana vatham(cervical spondylosis) using varman procedure. No research is presently done on ENT disorders.

(d) & (e): The Government has approved establishment of Post Graduate Institutes of Yoga and Naturopathy Education and Research(PGIYNER) with 200 bedded Yoga and Naturopathy hospital at Nagmangala, Karnataka and Jhajjar, Haryana. Land has been obtained from the State Government of Odisha for construction of a CRIYN.

CCRYN had also received a request from State Government of Tamil Nadu for establishment of a 100 bedded CRIYN at Namakkal. The request could not be taken up favorably as the earlier projects are required to be completed before taking up the fresh proposals.

A new institute namely, ‘Central Research Institute for Ayurveda Mineral and Marine Medicinal Resources’ at Goa has been approved ‘in-principle’ by Governing Body of CCRAS.
(f): Ministry of AYUSH through its Extra Mural Research (EMR) Scheme grants aid to public and private institutes which are competent to conduct research in this field.

The Research Councils are also engaged in collaborative research with premier institutions of the country, viz., All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS).

Ministry of AYUSH has provided leads available with AYUSH system for joint study for drug development with Indian Council of Medical Research(ICMR).
