(a)&(b): The main reason for increase in the number of people
living in slum clusters is due to migration of people from rural
to urban areas for better employment opportunities, educational
and medical facilities, etc in the urban areas as well as the
natural growth in population.
(c): Data about number of Dalits living in slum clusters,
metro-city-wise is not maintained.
(d)&(e): Slum Development is a State subject. However, with a
view to ameliorate the living conditions of the slum dwellers, a
programme known as National Slum Development Programme (NSDP)
was launched at the National level by the Government in August,
1996 for the development of urban slums. Funds under this
programme are allocated as Additional Central Assistance (ACA)
to various States on the basis of pro-rata slum population.
Besides a new Centrally sponsored scheme called Valmiki
Ambedkar Awas Yojana (VAMBAY)was launched on 2.12.2001 with a
view to emeliorating the conditions of the urban slum dwellers
living below poverty line who do not possess adequate shelter.
The Scheme has the primary objective to facilitate the
construction and upgradation of the dwelling units for the slum
dwellers and to provide health and enabling urban environment
through community toilets under Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, a
component of the Scheme.
(f): The details of funds released under national slum
Development Programme (NSDP) and Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana
(VAMBAY) during each of the last three years and current year
