Question : Modernisation of Ports

(a) whether the Government proposes to invest crores of rupees in the coming years for modernization and upgradation of ports, islands and fish harbours in the country, if so, the details thereof;
(b) the number of major ports proposed to be developed in the current fiscal year and the new sites identified by the Government to be converted into ports;
(c) whether the Government also proposes to set up coastal/special economic zones at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in Mumbai and if so, the details thereof along with the number of coastal/special economic zones likely to be set up; and
(d) the other steps taken/being taken by the Government to boost Sagarmala Project in the country?

(a)to(b):Yes, Madam. The Sagarmala Project intends to achieve the broad objective of enhancing the capacity of Major and non-Major Ports and modernizing them to make them efficient, thereby enabling them to become drivers of port-led economic development. In order to do the comprehensive and integrated planning for Sagarmala, a National Perspective Plan (NPP) is being prepared which will be completed within six months. Based on the findings of NPP, port modernization and upgradation projects including development of islands, fishing harbours will be taken up.
(c) Yes, Madam. A multi-product SEZ with self-sustained infrastructure , state-of-the art facilities is developed by JNPT on 277.34 hectares of land with an investment of around Rs.470 crores in Phase-I.
(d)Till finalization of National Perspective Plan, twelve early bird projects have been identified for funding under Sagarmala project.
