Question : Nuclear Power Production



(a) whether the Government proposes to set up new power plants across the country in order to increase its nuclear power production capacity;

(b) if so, whether the Government is likely to make a 25 percent increase in this capacity in the next ten years;

(c) if so, whether locations have been identified for this purpose and consent from the states involved has been obtained;

(d) the number of nuclear plants proposed to be set up in the country for increasing its production;

(e) the present number of nuclear plants for the construction of which agreement have been signed with foreign companies; and

(f) number and details of plants construction of which has not yet started due to various disputes

Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR PERSONNEL, PUBLIC GRIEVANCES & PENSIONS AND PRIME MINISTER’S OFFICE (DR.JITENDRA SINGH):

(a) Yes, Sir.

(b) The present installed nuclear power capacity will increase from the present 6780 MW to 22480 MW (over three fold) by the year 2031 on progressive completion of the projects under construction and accorded sanction.

(c) Yes, Sir.

(d) A total of twenty one (21) nuclear power reactors (including one by BHAVINI) will be set up to increase the nuclear power capacity. Of these, eleven (11) reactors are under construction / commissioning and pre-project activities have been taken up in ten (10) reactors.

(e) Agreements have been signed with M/s. Atomstroyexport (ASE) of Russian Federation for setting up four (4) nuclear power reactors viz. KKNPP-3&4 (2X1000 MW) and KKNPP-5&6(2X1000MW),which are presently under construction.

(f) There are no nuclear power projects whose construction has not started due to various disputes.
