Question : Waqf Board

(a) the present status of functioning of Waqf Board in various States/UTs including the
Union Territory of Lakshadweep, State/UT-wise; and

(b) the steps taken by the Government for smooth functioning of the said Waqf
Boards?

(a) : Waqf Boards are established and constituted by the States/UT Governments as per the
provisions of Section 13 and 14 of the Waqf Act, 1995 as amended. As per available
information, Waqf Boards have been constituted in following 29 States/UTs:- Andaman &
Nicobar Island, Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Delhi,
Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya
Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Odisha, Puducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil
Nadu, Tripura, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal. As per the provisions of
the Section 23 of the Waqf Act, 1995, the State Governments. have to appoint a full time
Chief Executive Officer of the Deputy Secretary rank of the State Government.

(b): As per Waqf Act, 1995 as amended, Central Waqf Council has been empowered to issue
directives to the State/UT Waqf Boards on the issues for smooth functioning of Waqf Boards.
Accordingly, Central Waqf Council regularly takes up various issues pertaining to the
functioning of Waqf Board with the State Governments/UT Administrations and Waqf Boards.
