Question : Maritime Trade

(a) whether any step has been taken to promote maritime trade between India and Iran;

(b) if so, the details thereof;


(c) whether the Government proposes to introduce seaplanes for various destinations; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

Answer given by the minister

(a) & (b) The following Agreement/MoU for bilateral cooperation in the Maritime Sector have been signed between India and Iran:

• Memorandum of Understanding for expansion of cooperation in Maritime Transport and Port affairs for the purpose of organizing and expanding the relations between the two countries was signed on 03 January 1995.

• Memorandum of understanding between the Government of the Republic of India and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran over Partnership of India in Development Plan of Chabahar Port was signed on 06 May 2015.

• Agreement on the establishment of International transport and transit corridor among the Governments of the Republic of India, the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran (Chabahar Agreement) was signed on 23 May, 2016.

(c) & (d) Sagarmala Development Company Limited (SDCL), a Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways has invited Expression of Interest (EoI) for Seaplane service whereby Airline Operators were invited to undertake joint development and operation in India. No separate budget has been provided as of now for this initiative. The objective of the EoI is to assess the interest of the airline operators for joint development and operation of the seaplane services with SDCL. The exact places for seaplane operation as well as estimation of the revenue will depend on techno-commercial viability and interest of airline operators for each location.
