Question : UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM



(a) whether the Government propose to give priority to mitigate the problem of unemployment in the country during the Tenth Five Year Plan;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government have made an assessment of various categories of unemployed persons at the end of the Ninth Five Year Plan; and

(d) if so, the details thereof and the extent to which the number of unemployed increased in the country during the Ninth Five Year Plan?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (d) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION No.456 REGARDING UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM FOR ANSWER ON 18-4-2001 BY SHRI NAWAL KISHORE RAI AND SHRI RAMJI LAL SUMAN

(a)&(b): A major objective of planning in India is employment generation. For working out the strategy for the Tenth Five Year Plan, a Steering Committee and several working groups have been set up by the Planning Commission which have begun their work.


(c) & (d): As per the assessment made in the Planning Commission, on the basis of key results of the 55th round survey (1999-2000) of National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO), the number of unemployed in the country in 1999-2000 was 8.94 million. The category wise details of the number of unemployed is given in the following table:
