Question : Increase in Capacity of Transmitters

(a) the kilowatt measure of transmitters installed in F.M. and radio stations in the country along with the State-wise details in this regard including Jharkhand, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh;

(b) whether the Government proposes to increase the capacity of transmitters and if so, the State-wise details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor; and

(c) whether the Government has increased the transmitter capacity of some radio stations and FM stations recently and if so, the details thereof?

(a) Prasar Bharati has informed that as on date 611 AIR transmitters (140 MW + 423 FM + 48 SW) are functional at 421 Radio Broadcasting Centres across the country. Location-wise details of power of these transmitters including Jharkhand, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh are given in Annexure-I.

(b) Yes. 59 existing FM transmitters have been approved for upgradation to higher capacity. State-wise details are given in Annexure-II.
(c) AIR has already increased the broadcast capacity of 4 MW transmitters (i.e. Itanagar 100 kW to 200 kW, Passighat 10 kW to 100 kW ,Tawang 10 kW to 20 kW & Guwahati 10 to 20 kW). Additionally, the broadcast capacity of 1 kW MW transmitters at 6 existing AIR Centres have also been upgraded by replacing with 10 kW FM transmitters. The locations are Jaipur, Cuttack, Jamshedpur, Keonjhar, Adilabad and Kurseong).

Apart from the above, 29 old outlived MW transmitters and 34 old outlived FM transmitters have also been replaced by new state of the art MW/FM transmitters. Details are given in Annexure-III (A) & III(B).
