Question : Pollution in Industrial Area of Maharashtra

(a) whether pollution is not under control despite strict rules in place in areas falling under Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation;
(b) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;
(c) whether the Government is aware of the chemical waste being dumped in the sea in Boisar Industrial Area of Maharashtra; and
(d) if so, the details thereof and the legal action taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) and(b) Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has conducted environmental quality monitoring in nine (9) Polluted Industrial Areas (PIAs) in State of Maharashtra. Out of these nine (9)PIAs the CPCB has categorizedthe PIAs namely Chandrapur andTarapur as Critically Polluted Areas (CPAs); whereas, Aurangabad, Dombivali, Nashik and Navi Mumbai are categorized as Severely Polluted Areas (SPAs).

The industrial units are mandatorily required to obtain Environment Clearance (EC), Consent to Establish (CTE)/ Consent to Operate (CTO), as applicable, from respective authoritiesbefore start of their operation. In case of non-compliance of the conditions stipulated in the permission with a view of environmental managementpollution may occur. The CPCB devised aprotocol which hasto be followed by the State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) /Pollution Control Committees (PCCs) for improvement of environmental quality in the Critically/Severely Polluted Areas (CPAs/SPAs).

(c) & (d) According to Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), there is no complaint received to MPCB regarding chemical waste dumping into Navapur Sea.
