Question : NEW STEEL PROJECTS



(a) the number of steel projects in public and private sectors which were taken up for const- ruction during the last two plan periods, State-wise;

(b) the present status of each of these projects indicating the number of projects which are yet to be completed, State-wise and the reasons in each case;

(c) the details of completed steel projects operating below their optimum capacity and the reasons therefor; and

(d) the corrective steps taken by the Government in this regard?

(a)&(b): During the 11th & 12th plan period, 8 steel projects in public sector were taken up. State-wise details of these projects are as follows:-

 Steel, being a deregulated sector, the decisions for construction of new steel plants in private sector are taken by the individual investors based on commercial considerations. As per available information, there are 29 private sector steel projects of one million ton per annum and above capacity in various stages of implementation. 

(c)&(d): During the period, three steel projects of SAIL, namely, Rourkela Steel Plant in Odisha, IISCO Steel Plant in West Bengal and Salem Steel Plant in Tamil Nadu have been completed. All new facilities under the integrated process route in these plants are in operation, stabilization and ramp-up stages till they achieve full capacity.
