(a) & (b) The unit for planning under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana
(PMGSY) is the `Habitation`. The PMGSY seeks to provide Connectivity to all
unconnected Habitations in the rural areas, with a population of more than 500
persons, through good All-weather roads, by the end of the Tenth Plan Period (2007).
In respect of the Hill States, (North-East, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu &
Kashmir, Uttaranchal) and the Desert Areas and Tribal (Schedule V) areas, the
objective is to connect Habitations with a population of 250 persons and above.
(c) to (e) As per Surveys conducted to identify Core Network as part of the PMGSY
programme, about 1.70 lakh Unconnected Habitations (eligible habitations) need to
be connected under the PMGSY. The programme was launched in December, 2000
and subject to availability of funds, the goal is to achieve the coverage by the end of
the Tenth Plan (2007).
(f) The road works are cleared on a year-to-year basis as per the allocation to the
States. A Statement indicating the State-wise number of unconnected habitations
connected up to May 2004 and being connected through road works already cleared is
annexed.
